Coalition Rejects Call For Election Postponement, Interim Government In Borno State

bornoThe Coalition of Progressive Political Parties, COP3, has rejected a call for postponement of general elections in Borno State till September and the constitution of an interim government for the state.

The coalition, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Bashir Yusuf Ibrahim on Friday, rejected the call and expressed dismay at “a statement purportedly issued by the Borno State chapter of Inter Party Advisory Council, IPAC, calling for the postponement of elections in the state and the establishment of an Interim Government on May 29th 2015”.

Ibrahim further expressed surprise at IPAC’s statement which “also claimed Borno State chapters of political parties that are members of this Coalition participated in the decision”, to call for election postponement and interim government in Borno.

COP3 said, “We wish to make it clear that none of the political parties in this Coalition is party to the purported decision to postpone elections and establish an interim government in Borno State.

“We condemn in its entirety any call for the postponement of elections in Nigeria or any of its states and further condemn any attempt to use the names of our members to justify the unwholesome plot”.

The coalition asserted that “There is absolutely no basis for not conducting elections in Nigeria or in Borno State considering the progress being made in the war against insurgency and the recovery of lost territory in recent weeks.

“We call on members of the public to ignore the statement under reference and to continue to support INEC in its effort to conduct free, fair and credible election across Nigeria on 28th March and 11th April 2015”.
