EPL Update: Sturridge Back With a Bang, Defoe Scores in Black Cats Win

Liverpool 2-0 West Ham

Daniel Sturridge marked his Liverpool return with a goal in Saturday’s win over West Ham.

Raheem Sterling opened scoring for the Reds six minutes into the second half, pouncing on a Philippe Coutinho clever pass to score his fifth goal of the league season.

Sturridge, making his first appearance since August 31, doubled advantage for Brendan Rodgers’ side with 10 minutes left to the dead, sending his right-footed low shot into the bottom corner of goal from a tight angle following another Coutinho assist.

Andy Carroll came closest to scoring for the Hammers but his first-half header from close range was kept out by Simon Mignolet.

United 3-1 Leicester

Manchester United cruised past bottom team Leicester City to move up to third place in the table.

The 20-time champions got off to a poor start before Daley Blind set up Dutch striker Robin van Persie to score his ninth league goal of the season, clinically steering his compatriot’s lofted pass into the bottom corner of goal.

Radamel Falcao turned in Mark Schwarzer’s rebound of Angel Di Maria’s shot to double United’s lead, before Wes Morgan headed the ball into his own net and placed the game beyond his team after 44 minutes of football.

Marcin Wasilewski headed in Esteban Cambiasso’s cross in the 80th minute to hand the Foxes some consolation.

Sunderland 2-0 Burnley

Jermaine Defoe was among the goals for Sunderland, in the Black Cats’ second home league win of the season against Burnley.

Connor Wickham broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, having been left unmarked in the area to thump home a powerful header from six yards.

Defoe just over a week since returning to the English top-flight from Toronto FC was at the end of a brilliant team work to turn in Patrick van Aanholt’s square ball- his 125th goal in the Premier League.

Gustavo Poyet’s side moved up to 14th place after the win, four points above the relegation zone, while Burnley are one point above the drop.

West Brom 0-3 Spurs

Christian Eriksen’s opener and Harry Kane’s brace brought Tony Pulis’ unbeaten start to West Bromwich Albion managerial rein to an end.

Eriksen needed six minutes to place Tottenham Hotspur ahead with a brilliant free-kick and Kane followed suit with his 9th league goal of the season.

The striker grabbed his second from the penalty spot after a Joleon Lescott handball in the area- his 20 goal in all competition this season.

Craig Dawson’s header came back off the crossbar before the break.
