Mikel Scores First-Ever Champions League Goal

John Obi Mikel scored his first Champions League goal as Chelsea denied Sporting Lisbon passage into the round of 16 with a comfortable 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Cesc Fabregas broke the deadlock early on from the penalty spot after Filipe Luis had been fouled by Ricardo Esgaio.

Andre Schurrle doubled the hosts’ advantage on his first team return, finding the bottom corner with a right-footed effort.

Jonathan Silva pulled a goal back for Sporting but Mikel restored Chelsea’s two-goal cushion few minutes later, taping in from Fabregas free-kick.

Sporting failed to advance from the group stage by a point after Schalke won 1-0 away at Slovenian side Maribor.

The Nigeria international has now opened his account in European competition after 58 appearances, to add to his 3 FA Cup strikes and his solitary Premier League goal from Chelsea’s home win against Fulham last season.
