Nigeria Police Warns Officers Against ‘Accidental Discharge’

police_officers_1Th‎e Nigerian Police on Thursday warned that it would not condone any incident of unlawful killings by security agencies often regarded as ‘accidental discharge’.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said the Nigerian Police would punish any of its personnel, who took the life of a Nigerian on the excuse of ‘accidental discharge’.

Ojukwu, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, spoke at ‎ a media briefing of the Forum of Spokespersons of Security and Response Agencies, organised by I-Nigerian Initiative, in Abuja on Thursday.

The police image maker noted that there was no explanation for such an avoidable waste of human lives as it was not possible for a gun that had not been corked to fire.

‎He said, “There is nothing like accidental discharge because every gun has a safety lever.

“You must have cocked the gun before it fired and you only cock a gun when you have the intention of firing. If you kill illegally, the police will deal with you”.

Ojukwu, who also spoke on the controversial issue of preventing women from standing as guarantors for detainees to be admitted to bail, said that there was no law preventing a woman from taking somebody on bail.
