Sewe Sport secured a narrow 2-1 win over Al Ahly in the first leg of the Caf Confederation Cup final on Saturday at the Robert Champroux stadium.

Christian Kouame Koffi opened scoring for the Ivoirian hosts from the penalty spot on 23 minutes after Roger Assale was fouled by Ahly goalkeeper Ahmed Aly.

Hassan Mahmoud restored parity just before the hour mark, converting a cross from the left wing.

Assale ensured Sewe proceed into next weekend’s return leg in Cairo boasting a slight edge when he grabbed the winner with eight minutes left to full time.

Ahly, who are winners of a record 18 continental titles and one Afro-Asian cup, are bidding to become the first Egyptian club ever to win the second-tier club competition. The Caf Confederation Cup also is the only silverware missing from the ‘Red Devils’s’ trophy cabinet.

With the record for most international titles, Ahly have won 8 Caf Champions League trophies, 6 Caf Super Cups, and four of the defunct Caf Cup Winners’ Cup.

Having dropped from the Champions League the final qualifying round for the group phase, Ahly have faced Sewe twice this term in the group stages of the Confederation Cup, managing a 1-1 draw in Abidjan before edging the match in Cairo 1-0. They did pip Sewe for top place in their pool via head-to-head rules as the Egyptians only managed two wins in six matches.
