The bill, which was sponsored by Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba (PDP/Cross-River), seeks to provide for the establishment of the National Commission for conciliation and arbitration, National Labour Council and the office of the registrar of trade unions to administer labour laws in Nigeria.

It was read for the first time on March 1, 2012.

Leading debate on the bill, Mr. Ndoma-Egba urged his colleagues to support it for “the reposition of labour related dispute resolution mechanism in the country”.

The deputy majority leader, Abdul Ningi (PDP/Bauchi), said the bill seeks to achieve proper labour demarcation. He also said the bill should be seen as a means towards restoring sanity to labour matters.

Following the overwhelming support of most lawmakers for the bill, the Senate President, David Mark, who presided over yesterday’s sitting, referred it to the committee on labour.

The committee was given four weeks to conclude its assignment.
