President Jonathan to Host Falcons After Seventh AWC Success

Nigeria president Goodluck Jonathan will receive newly crowned African women’s champions Super Falcons in Abuja on Wednesday, according to the sports minister Tammy Danagogo.

Goals from Desire Oparanozie and Asisat Oshoala helped Nigeria clinch a seventh African Women’s Championship (AWC) crown with a 2-0 win over Cameroon.

Danagogo announced this while addressing the team before the final in Windhoek, Namibia on Saturday. He disclosed that a proposal has been sent to Mr. President to receive the team at the Federal Council meeting on Wednesday.

“I know it is not just going to be a presidential hand shake alone because he likes to appreciate those who do the country proud in any sector of national endeavour,” the minister, who also charged the coach Edwin Okon-led side to strive to finish off with a flourish, said.

He also revealed that the team will be hosted by the National Sports Commission (NSC) before the Presidential reception during the victory dinner at the Nigerian House, Windhoek.

The Falcons are expected to depart Windhoek for Johannesburg by 2pm on Sunday and leave for Lagos by 11pm.

Meanwhile, plaudits have been pouring in for the victorious ladies from a host of Super Eagles stars after their record-extending triumph at the 9th AWC.

Middlesbrough defender Keneth Omeruo took to his Tweeter field to appreciate the Falcons’ efforts, saying: “Big Congrats to the Super falcons of Nigeria for winning the African Female Nations Cup.”

Nigeria and Monaco defender Elderson Echiejile tweeted: “Congrats to the #SuperFalcons for winning the #AWC2014. #Canada2015 now a reality.”
