Angel Di Maria says wearing the iconic No. 7 shirt at Manchester United serves as a source of “motivation” for him.
The 26-year-old is already relishing the ambition of joining the pantheon of legends who have previously won the famous No. 7 shirt such as Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo after series of dazzling display.
He has has made an immediate impact since arriving as a club record signing from Real Madrid. He has scored three times and made three assists in five Premier League matches, including the opening goal at home to Everton last Sunday and the assist for Radamel Falcao’s match-winner as United climbed to fourth in the table.
“It is a source of motivation,” the Argentina international, who was voted club supporters’ player of the year for September, told United’s official website.
“When you wear a shirt that’s been worn by the likes of David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s something you’re always going to be pleased about.
“The fact that the club have chosen to give me that shirt number also gives me a huge confidence boost, so that’s why I’m very happy to have this number.”
Having played four seasons with Ronaldo at Real Madrid, Di Maria added that the former ‘Red Devils’ forward, played a part in encouraging him to move to Old Trafford.
“Before we knew I was coming to Manchester, he told me it’s a massive club, I would be very happy here and it would be good for me,” he said. “At that time we didn’t know for sure that I was coming or not, so we didn’t go into great detail, but what he did say helped me greatly to make my decision.”
