Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has cautioned politicians in the country against the campaign of calumny against opponents ahead of the 2015 general elections.
The Sultan who spoke on Saturday while delivering a Sallah message at his palace in Sokoto, said politicians in Nigeria should put the fear of God above every other thing and ensure opponents are not abused to ensure electioneering campaigns across the country is conducted peacefully.
“Politicians should fear God and realise that He gives power to whoever He wishes. So, we don’t want violence during campaigns,” he said. Electioneering campaigns across the country are expected to officially start in November, 90 days before the elections, in accordance with the law.
The leader of the Nigerian Muslim community also challenged governments at all levels to redouble efforts aimed at reducing unemployment in the country.
