2015: PDP Gives Jonathan 1-Week Ultimatum To Declare Re-election Interest

President Goodluck Jonathan has for long kept mum on whether he would run for re-election in 2015, but now he has been given a deadline by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to make a formal declaration.

According to the national leadership of the PDP, the President and other aspirants vying for elective positions must within the next one week purchase their expression of interest and nomination forms, as the party cannot go for a national convention to ratify someone who has not indicated interest to contest.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh told journalists at the party’s national secretariat on Wednesday that the October 30 closing date for the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms will not be extended by a minute. The time, according to him for closing of the form sale on the day, is 6pm.

“The NWC today decided that the issue of the closing date for the collection of the nomination forms cannot be extended. It will not be extended. No party member can obtain forms for our congress and convention 2014 after the deadline, the last date is 30th of October and it will not be extended,” said Metuh.

The PDP had last month adopted Jonathan as a consensus candidate for the 2015 presidential election. The president is therefore expected to formally declare his interest in standing for re-election in 2015 before the end of the ultimatum given by the party.

“In the first place, the reason, why everybody should join politics, is to serve the people. The essence of government is to shield the poor masses and ensure justice,” he said.

“My main mission of joining the APC is because I have seen justice, I have seen development and I have seen the desire for the leadership at the highest peak to sacrifice their personal comfort just to make the poor people feel good. So I am in the APC to deliver, I am into the APC to help the people.”
