Newcastle’s De Jong Ruled Out for Several Months With Thigh Injury

Newcastle United midfielder Siem de Jong is set for several months on the sidelines with a thigh injury, the club have confirmed.

The 25-year-old could miss up to four months of actions after damaging his right thigh in training.

“Siem de Jong sustained an injury to his right thigh in training earlier this week and is to be assessed further at the start of next week,” a Newcastle spokesperson said. “Initial indications are that he is likely to be out for a number of months.”

De Jong missed the Netherlands 2-0 friendly loss to Italy on Thursday night because he had already been injured for the start of the Premier League season and instead remained with the rest of the Newcastle squad on Tyneside.

He is understood to have suffered the fresh injury kicking a ball in a routine training session.

The injury comes at a bad timing for coach Alan Pardew, who chose not to engage in any of the summer transfer deadline day business, despite allowing French playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa join Hull City on loan.

The Dutchman only joined the ‘Magpies’ from Eredevisie side Ajax for £6m in August.
