Military Embarks On Search For Missing Airforce Plane

The military has commenced an intensive search and rescue operation of the Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet (NAF 466) that has been missing since Friday afternoon.

The plane had gone on a mission to dislodge the marauding Boko Haram terrorists from some towns of Adamawa state when contact with it was lost.

“The aircraft, with two pilots onboard, left Yola at about 10:45am on September 12, 2014 on a routine operational mission and was expected back by 12:00 noon. Since then, all efforts to establish contact with the aircraft have not yielded any positive result. Search-and-rescue efforts towards establishing contact with the crew are ongoing,” Director of Defence Information (DDI), Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade said in a statement.

Military operations to dislodge terrorists in Nigeria’s northeast have recently intensified following increased attack launched on some towns in Adamawa and Borno States by Islamist sect Boko Haram. While the military has often announced its operations have been successful in several towns, the Boko Haram sect and other sources have sometimes discredited claims by the military.
