United, Three Other EPL Sides Lose Out of the League Cup

Manchester United headlined the list of four Premier League casualties to fall to lower opposition in the second round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

United failed to reach the third round of the League Cup for the first time since 1995, following a 4-0 defeat by third-division Milton Keynes Dons.

The defeat came hours after the Old Trafford club announced the arrival of Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid in a British-record £59.7m deal.

The Argentine midfielder and most of his new team-mate were omitted from the squad for the disappointing loss at Stadium:mk, as Coach Louis van Gaal named a second-string team, with only goalkeeper David de Gea left from Sunday’s draw at Sunderland.

Will Grigg scored either side of half-time for the League One side before substitute Benik Afobe added a brace.

One major setback from Tuesday night loss is the loss of midfielder Shinji Kagawa, who was substituted after a clash of heads with Darren Potter.

The Chinese suffered a bloodied nose in the process and- shortly after- was replaced by Adnan Januzaj, who came up the side’s only site at goal six minutes to the dead, when he hit the post, as MK Dons dominated at home.

Elsewhere promoted sides Leicester City and Burnley were both beaten 1-0 at home, with the former going down to fourth-tier Shrewsbury Town and the latter losing to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

West Ham United were beaten 5-4 on penalties at home to third-tier Sheffield united after regulation time ended 1-goal apiece.

West Bromwich Albion needed the lotteries of penalty to edge fourth-tier Oxford united 7-6, with record signing, Brown Ideye, missing his spot-kick.

Newcastle United, Southampton, Swansea City and Crystal Palace all made it through to the third round.
