A man from Connecticut was charged with murder after he stabbed his one-year-old niece to death. According to the police, he stabbed the infant in her stomach while he was supposed to be babysitting.

The police in Bristol responded to a 911 dispatcher who informed them a baby had been critically injured right before 7:30 pm Monday. When police arrived at the scene, officers noticed a person rushing toward them holding an infant with a deadly laceration to her stomach.

The police tried their best to give the infant medical attention before paramedics drove her to Bristol Hospital. The infant was later flown to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, where she was pronounced dead, according to local officials.

The infant’s name is Zaniyah Calloway. Police said an 11-year-old child was also present during the murder, but was thankfully unharmed.

The infant’s uncle 36-year-old Arthur Hapgood, of Waterbury, ran out of the house naked as police officers approached. He was immediately taken into police custody without any further issue.

Arthur Hapgood was taken to Bristol Hospital and treated for unknown injuries. Bristol police officers took him to the police department, after he was discharged from the hospital. He was charged with murder, reckless endangerment and risk of injury to a minor.

Hapgood is currently being held on $1.5 million bail and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Bristol Superior Court. He does not have a lawyer.

Hapgood has previously had trouble with the law. In 2008, Hapgood was sentenced to four years in prison for selling drugs.
