Interior Minister Warns Immigration Personnel Against Corrupt Practices

Abba-MoroMen and Officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) have been warned against engaging in corrupt practices while carrying out their assigned duties.

The Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, handed down the warning while declaring open the NIS 2014 conference/stakeholders’ interactive forum at the International Conference Centre, Abuja on Friday.

Moro stressed that “Business as usual will no longer be tolerated, while corruption and extortion will be appropriately sanctioned”.

While insisting that NIS must rededicate itself to seamless service delivery at home and in the Diaspora, the minister said that travel documents must be delivered to Nigerians within 24 hours of application.

Also, he reminded officers of the service that they were usually the first point of contact with the country by the international community and should be upright in their dealings.

Moro charged the Service to, during deliberations, fashion out new designs that would ensure that Nigeria remained top on issues of migration management.

Meanwhile, the minister has assured Nigerians that with the recent training of border patrol personnel, “the often touted porous borders, leading to internal insecurity, will be more effectively secured”.

He added that: “through enhanced border patrols and working in conjunction with Port Health Officials, the Nigeria Immigration has been in the forefront of the fight to contain the spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus”.
