Adamawa Acting Governor Dissolves Nyako’s Cabinet

The acting governor of Adamawa State, Alhaji Umar Fintiri, has sacked all the political appointees of the former governor of the state, Admiral Murtala Nyako (retd).

In a statement signed by Abdullahi Liman Tukur, the Secretary to the State Government, all the political appointees of the Nyako-led administration were directed to hand over government properties in their custody to their respective permanent secretaries and other appropriate officers within government establishment, Nigerian Tribune reports.

According to the statement, following the resignation of the deputy governor and the impeachment of Nyako, commissioners, special advisers, principal assistants, special assistants and other political appointees have hereby been relieved of their appointments.

The majority leader of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Honourable Ishaq Bala, a member representing Yola North constituency, was also removed for not being in support of the Nyako’s impeachment. He was replaced by Salishu Kabilo from Verre constituency as the new majority leader of the assembly.

Fintiri also scrapped the Special Projects and Programmes Unit, SPPU, at the Government House.

In a press release signed by Solomon Kumangar, Director, Press and Public Affairs, Government House, Yola, the acting governor ordered the scrapping of the SPPU, directing the state Head of Service to retrieve all government property in custody of the unit with immediate effect.

Fintiri explained that the scrapping of the SPPU was done because the body was established contrary to the law and civil service procedures.

It would be recalled that the embattled former Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, was impeached from office by the state lawmakers on charges of corruption and misappropriation on Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Some are not happy with Nyako’s impeachment especially his party, the APC which alleged that lawmakers were bribed to remove the governor. Also reacting to the impeachment, Vice President Atiku Abubakar warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led federal government against excessive use of power.
Following the impeachment of former Governor Murtala Nyako, there were reports that all Local government Council Chairmen and development area administrators in the state have decamped to the ruling party, PDP.

Vice Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd), GCON, CFR: rcds, D.Agric. (H.C.) was elected Executive Governor of Adamawa State in May 2007. Before then he served in the Navy, and also as a former military governor of Niger State. He was appointed Chief of Naval Staff in December 1989.
