A Moroccan man was arrested after allegedly burying his date alive because he thought she was already dead.

The woman, 25-year-old Mina El Houari, lived in France and had been talking online with the Moroccan man for several months, according to News.com.au’s translation of regional French paper La Provence.

On May 19, Houari arrived in Fez and checked into a hotel before meeting the man, whose name has not been released.

At some point during their date, police say Houari, who was an undiagnosed diabetic, passed out and went into a diabetic coma, Morocco World News reported.

Thinking that Houari had inexplicably dropped dead, her date allegedly made the snap decision to bury her body in his backyard. Officials say she suffocated to death in the shallow grave.

Employees of the hotel where Houari was staying called police when she didn’t return.

Houari’s family filed a missing persons report after not hearing from her for some time, and authorities eventually traced her body to the man’s home. He allegedly confessed to the incident and was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
