Five-time champion Venus Williams also advanced after beating Japan’s Kurumi Nara 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. The win was the American’s 73rd at the All England Club and she is now a win shy of Steffi Graf’s 74 hauls.

After clinching the first set tie break, Venus dominated play against the diminutive world number 41 from Japan, and with 46 winners and 16 errors Venus was through to round three on Court No. 3.

“The tie-break, that’s when it comes down to who is more consistent and aggressive. In the beginning that was her but I managed to turn it around in the tie-break.

“I think we both play a similar game, really go for it and she’s one of the kind of players that can get really hot and every time she plays me, she plays really well, so I have to be ready for that,” admitted the 33-year-old.

Venus will meet another former champion, Petra Kvitova, who needed five match points to see off Germany’s Mona Berthel 6-2, 6-0 in the third round.
