Pillars Edge Bayelsa to Climb Top of Glo Premier League

Kano Pillars moved top of the Glo Premier League standings on Wednesday, thanks to a 1-0 win over Bayelsa United in a rescheduled match in Kano.

It was ‘Sai Masugida’s’ first game since the death of the late Emir of Kano and both teams paid tribute to the late Ado Bayero with a traditional one minute silence.

Striker Gambo Mohammed scored the only goal of the game on half-hour mark, clinically tapping home an assist from Abdul Haruna to pull the hosts ahead.

The Super Eagles striker and team-mate Ezekiel Mbah came close to increasing the tally, but were denied by former Nigeria youth international Kazeem Yekeen in goal for the ‘Restoration Boys’.

The win helped the defending champions climb top of the log on 31 points, courtesy of their surplus goal advantage.

Second-placed Nasarawa United also have 31 points, four goals shy of the new leaders.

Pillars could shore off title rivals by at least a point, if they earn a draw against visiting Dolphins FC, while victory on home ground ensures a three point gap.

The game, a rescheduled Match Day 19 encounter following the death of the late Emir, brings to a close the first round of the Nigeria League.
