Algeria Set African Goal-Scoring Record With the Win Over S. Korea

Algeria became the first African nation to score four goals in a single World Cup game, as they edged South Korea in a six-goal thriller in Porto Alegre on Sunday.

The Desert Foxes moved up to second in their second game of Group H after a 4-2 win over South Korea.

Islam Slimani ran onto a long ball to flick in the opening goal and Rafick Halliche’s doubled the North Africans’ lead a couple of minutes to the half-hour mark.

Abdelmoumene Djabou’s sidefooted effort made it 3-0, but Song Heung-min pulled one back for the Asians on 50 minutes.

Yacine Brahimi restored Algeria’s three-goal cushion, before Koo Ja-Cheol scored Korea’s second in the 72nd minute.

Algeria- beaten narrowly by Group H leaders Belgium in their opening game- held on for their first World Cup win since 1982 to climb second.

A second defeat would have ended coach Vahid Halilhodzic’s side’s chances of progressing to the second-round for the first time, but will now have to beat Russia in their final group game to advance- a draw would do if South Korea fail to beat Belgium.

“We played very well, very effectively and then it went down a little bit- maybe it was psychological, maybe it was physical- we will have to talk about this,” said Halilhodzic.

“But I think that this was a real feat this afternoon and I would like to congratulate my players.”
