A nine-month old girl died after being left inside a car while her father went to work.

Police in Rockledge, Florida, said the girl was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after being left in the car ‘for a couple of hours’.

Her father, Stephen Lillie, 31, was arrested after the incident and charged with aggravated manslaughter on Friday.

Investigators said Lillie headed for work on the day in question but forgot to drop off his daughter with a care giver.

By the time he realised he had left her in the car, it was too late to revive her.

A spontaneous memorial has been created at the site with neighbours and well-wishers leaving cards and cuddly toys to mourn the loss of the little girl.

When it is 22°C/72°F outside, the temperature inside a car can reach 47°C/117°F within 60 minutes.

Any resulting dehydration and heatstroke can prove fatal.

In the UK police have grounds to take adults to task over the issue if they happen to pass by and spot a child alone in a vehicle.
