PSG Stunned Shortly After Being Crowned French Champions

Paris St. Germain (PSG) were Ligue 1champions for a second successive season before they even kicked the ball at home to Rennes, following Monaco’s 1-1 draw with bottom team Guingamp earlier on Wednesday night.

PSG went into the game at the Parc des Princes in a party mood thanks to Fatik Atik’s 86th-minute equaliser at the Stade Louis II, which came soon after Dimitar Berbatov had fired second-placed Monaco ahead.

Relegation-threatened Guingamp lost Moustapha Diallo to a red card late on but Monaco could not find the winner they needed to keep the title race going for at least a while longer.

The Parisians were eight points ahead of the ‘Principality’ club with three matches to go, going into Wednesday’s encounter and needed a win over Rennes to place the title race beyond Claudio Ranieri’s men.

But Monaco draw left PSG with an unassailable seven point lead- in spite of the latter’s loss- with just two matches left.

However, mid-table Rennes were bent on ruining Laurent Blanc’s side’s title celebrations by scoring two goals through Foued Kadir and Paul-Georges Ntep , before the half-hour mark after Argentina winger Ezequiel Lavezzi had opened scoring for PSG.

Even a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic return after a five-week hiatus with a thigh injury, failed to inspire the newly-crowned champions to restoring parity, which although no more had consequence on the outcome of the season. The Swede was unable to add to his 40 goals in his 45th appearance.

Nevertheless, the Parisian club’s players and staff were given a rapturous reception as they performed a lap of honour after the full-time whistle.
