Reports we are monitoring indicate that protesting lecturers of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education have been dispersed by men of the Nigeria Police with tear gas and hot water as they attempted to gain unauthorised entry into the National Assembly complex.

The lecturers, under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) together with their students, from across the country, had begun the protest at the parking lot of the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, to draw attention to their plight before they proceeded to the National Assembly.

The lecturers, who have been on strike for months to press home their demands for better funding of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education as well as improved teaching/learning environment, were earlier addressed by Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, when they staged a brief sit-in before the entrance to the Labour Ministry’s block of the Federal Secretariat.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions reading “FG meet COEASU and ASUP demands”, “Government systematically Killing Teacher-Education”, among others.

  1. I feel sorry fo those who depend on these self-centred, clueless, classless, myopic, greedy and possessed “bleeders” called leaders. This country is a JUNGLE! Leave for where there’re human beings, it is better to be a servant in Heaven than be a King in Hell!
