Liverpool are Favourites On Sunday- Moyes

Manchester United manager David Moyes says Liverpool are favourites to win Sunday’s lunchtime kick-off game at Old Trafford.

Brendan Rodgers’ side sits second on the log, seven points adrift of leaders, Chelsea, with 59 points- the ‘Reds” highest ever total after 28 matches in the Premier League era.

“Liverpool’s league position suggests they’re ahead of us,” said Moyes in his pre-game media briefing on Friday. “They possibly do come here as favourites.”

The champions, on the other hand, have struggled this season under Moyes’ first season and have taken only six points from nine games against the other teams in the league top seven in the ongoing campaign.

The Scotsman however admits he is well aware of the rivalry between both clubs.

He said: “There has been great rivalry between the two clubs. Liverpool are having a very good season. They’re our next game at home and we have to do all we possibly can to beat them.

“We’re maybe not in as strong a position as we’d like to be but I think in every other season they’ve been very good at this stage coming into the final furlong. We’ve got big games coming up this month so it will be important.”

Meanwhile, Moyes expects striker Robin van Persie to be given a new contract after the Dutch international expressed his desire to stay on at the club.

Van Persie, who joined the side from Arsenal for £24m, quelled rumours he is discontent at the club on Thursday night, saying he would even extend his deal when his current four-year contract expires in two year’s time.

“He is happy here and we are very pleased about that,” Moyes added.

“He has a couple of years on his contract and I’m sure that (an extension) is something the board will look at.”
