Cricket: Nigeria Retains WCL Division 5 Status Despite Losing to Malaysia

Nigeria is save in the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cricket League (WCL) Division 5 after losing their final match of the 2014 tournament to hosts Malaysia.

Malaysia secured a big win over Nigeria to seal promotion to the to WCL Division 4.

Nigeria won the coin toss and chose to bat first but struggled against the Malaysian bowling attack.

Just four players reached double figures, with Ricky Sharma and Olajide Bejide top scoring with 24 each.

Suharril Fetri and Sharulnizam Yusof both took three wickets for Malaysia as they bowled out Nigeria for just 113 in 32.3 overs.

Malaysia’s innings didn’t get off to a great start when Shafiq Sharif was caught behind from the fifth ball of the innings with the score on four. But that was the only flaw in the Malaysian innings.

Nasir Shafiq and Ahmed Fiaz guided Malaysia to the nine wicket win with an unbroken 111 partnership. Shafiq scored 46 and Malaysian skipper Fiaz top scored with 60.

Whatever the result of the Tanzania v Cayman Islands match Nigeria are safe in Division Five.

Malaysia and Jersey are the sides promoted to Division Four, where they join Denmark, Italy, Oman and Singapore. That tournament will be played in Singapore in June/July.
