APC May Settle On Buhari And Tinubu As Presidential And VP Candidates

The leadership of the opposition All Progressives Congress may have decided on Major-General Muhammadu Buhari and Senator Bola Tinubu as party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates, This Day reports citing ‘reliable party sources’.

This information comes a week after Sunday Independent gathered that the APC settled on Buhari as its presidential candidate as, allegedly, he could guarantee vast support for the party from the North-West and North-East.

The former head of state obtained an APC membership card in February 2014. However, the first indications that Buhari might contest the party’s presidential primary emerged in August 2013.

According to This Day’s sources, the party’s decision was informed by the massive votes that the pairing of Buhari and Tinubu could gain during the election as Buhari is very popular at the grassroots level in most parts of the North-West and North-East, while Tinubu comes from the South-West.

The APC estimated that Buhari will be banking on some 44,848,911 registered voters who accounted for 61 per cent of total registered voters of 73,528,040 in the 2011 election.

This is in contrast to the 27,735,678 registered voters in the North-Central, South-South and the South-East zone combined, who accounted for 39 per cent of total registered voters in the 2011 election.

APC’s strategists also suppose that with Tinubu as Buhari’s running mate the duo will be able to secure the bulk of the 2,941,214 votes cast for President Goodluck Jonathan in the South-West and Edo State in 2011.

“With Buhari and Tinubu as presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively, our goal is to secure the core north and South-west, which are the most populous sections of the country and can guarantee us at least 50 per cent of the total votes in the country during the presidential election,” an APC source told This Day.

A compromise : Muslim-Muslim ticket and ‘new PDP’ chairmanship

On the impact of the Muslim-Muslim ticket on the electorate, especially with the insurgency in the North-East, the source said the party had decided to forge ahead with the ticket because it is certain that it has a winning formula, ” irrespective of the accusations by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that APC is a Muslim party“.

“Like most South-Westerners, Tinubu is quite liberal and we hope this would persuade Christian voters that they have nothing to fear. So Buhari and Tinubu have reached a quiet agreement to contest on a joint platform, with the latter already setting up structures nationwide,” the source added.

The source said that by fielding Buhari and Tinubu, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar – who joined APC recently – has effectively been left out in the cold.

Another party source, when asked how Rotimi Amaechi who has been against a Muslim-Muslim ticket reacted to the pairing of Buhari and Tinubu, said that the issue had been discussed and the party had decided to handover the party leadership to the members of the so-called ‘new PDP’.

To recall, seven PDP governors – Amaechi among them – had announced their decision to join the APCon November 26.

“Our plan is to ensure Amaechi secures the senatorial ticket on our platform and wins the election to go to the Senate. “But before this happens, we shall immediately make Sam Jaja, who is his kinsman, the chairman of APC. Then when Amaechi becomes a senator, our goal is to see him emerge as the senate president, following which Jaja will be asked to step down as the party’s chairman to ensure ethnic balancing,” the source said.

This is mistake of the year from APC. They surpose to choose Fashola instead of tinubu. Besides, Rotimi Amechi hasnt been to the senate before so how will he emerge as senate president. This is wrong calculations. Although winning senatoria election may not pose serious problem for Gov. Rotimi Amechi.

I think the pairing is considerable. I will choose APC and mobilize pple to vote for dis pairing. We should not be talking abt religious sentiment in such a time as dis in nigeria. We shud rather look at antecedents of any candidate presented. Each and every nigerian shud also look quietly on their inside to hear d quiet voice of God on each candidate presented by d parties. In any case, let us go for change. Let us try anoda platform other than PDP. But if PDP present an option dat is largely more reasonable dan dis to me, i go for it. I am not of a party but of tested & tried personality who can truly move us a step ahead and higher & faster dan where we are. The joining is stil a bit far, but we wil get. I love Nigeria. It is d GIFT of God for me. Meanwhile, this is my thought and opinion…. i will have loved it beta if APC have presented Buhari and Bakare, CPC 2011 presidential flag bearers this time around. Just a thought frm me but am stil at home with their option.
“I-NEED-NIGERIA!” A cry frm God’s Heart, Frm my Heart, a cry frm the core of Africa’s Heart, a cry frm the Nations of the world. This giant must rise into its full potentials and prowess. This nation’s destiny among comity of nations is great and awesome. God ruled, people oriented leadership must arise. Proactive and Pragmatic Followership must rise too. Nigeria needs u and me.

D present administration and abt the obj’s term no mata how poor it seemed to most of us actually started dis “bridge building” but it has bn wit mixed interests, clouded directions & intentions.
I salute my fellow nigerians for ur patience and love for this country. Hv bn waiting to c APC’s pairing. This is very very wrong. I will rather vote for pdp than to vote for Buhari and Tinubu. Did Buhari think we hv forgotten what he turned this country to after he lost d last election? We in d south will vote for Jonathan not pdd. Jonathan shd get his priorities straight this tym. Buhari go and manage d crisis u started in d north b4 thinki of contesting.

Many just post comment without the knowledge of this country’s history as recent as three decades ago; Tinubu may not be a saint but Buhari is definitely the right candidate for that post if this country is to progress.Hint? how many retired generals are as modest as Buhari? Many who do not even go beyond the position of common state administrators are Billionaires, even when Abacha needed sanity with respect to PTF it was Buhari he entrusted the institution with and up till now the structures and facilities are still there in govt-owned universities at least for all to see. This is the reason why i believe Nigeria history should be made a compulsory subject in our schools and the syllabus revised every two years to educate young and gullible nigerian populace.

Hey, come on everyone.Let’s be objective in our comments and put the nation first before religion and ethnicity.Dis is what APC has failed 2do.I welcome d opposition but not d bias nature.Buhari will only get d votes of some(not all) core northerners who are religiously bias.Even Tinubu cannot guarantee southwest.I saw dis mistake coming for APC b/cos of d insistence of one man for power even when APC knows he is not d best candidate.Instead of wanting 2liberate Naija with Fashola/Umar ticket,APC is relying on ethnic and religiously sentimental Buhari/Tinubu ticket.APC will fail. Its a pity

#LekkiMassacre: CNN Dares Nigeria Government, Updates Second Report (Video)

The Cable News Network, CNN seems not done with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government with the television channel releasing another report on the shooting at the Lekki toll gate during the End SARS protests.

Recall that the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, called out CNN over its report on the incident.

He added that CNN was biased in its report and needs to be sanctioned.

The Minister also addressed a letter to the management of CNN in Atlanta.

The network, however, on Tuesday released the second report with more damning footage showing soldiers shooting at unarmed protesters on October 20, 2020.

The second report also shows the Commander, 81 Division, Brig.Gen Ahmed Taiwo, admitting before the judicial panel in Lagos that military men had live ammunition in their weapons while at the tollgate.

CNN also noted that the statement of Brig.Gen Taiwo contradicts that of the Minister who had claimed last week that the army fired blank bullets.

It was also revealed in the new report, the moment when protesters were running as soldiers open fire at the tollgate.
