A former National President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), on Tuesday rejected the allowance set aside for delegates to the National Conference, which was inaugurated yesterday. It is believed that each delegate would be paid N4 million per month for the duration of the talks.
Agbakoba, a former President of the Civil Liberties Organisation and one of the delegates representing Civil Society Organisations, based his decision on the fact that the conference “is a call to service and an opportunity to chart a new course for our country”.
This was contained in his letter to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, whose office serves as secretariat for the National Conference.
The letter, entitled ‘Acceptance of nomination as delegate to the National conference’, read, “I write to accept my nomination as one of the 24 civil society delegates to the National Conference.
“I believe the National Conference is a call to service and an opportunity to chart a new course for our country. Regrettably, I will not be able to accept any form of remuneration/financial benefits from the conference”.
Agbakogba’s action came barely 48 hours after the convener of the Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare, also declared that he would not accept any form of remuneration.
Bakare, representing Ogun State at the conference, had said he made the decision not to collect the money in order to dispel any insinuation that his motivation for accepting to take part in the conference was for material gains.
That makes only 2 out of the 400 plus. We hope the figure will rise to 400 plus, that way, we will know that they have the interest of the Nation at heart. WE DEY WAIT
We still have kind-hearted people in this country despite everything.
With this rejection of remuneration from 2 people out of the 400 delegates, that is a glimmer of hope. Never thought anyone in Nigeria would rejected such.
SOME CHARACTERS ARE MADE OF NOTHING BUT INTEGRITY AND A HEART OF GOLD. OLISA AND BAKERE ARE SUCH CHARACTERS.THANK YOU SIRS.
