The ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is not ready to relinquish its grip on power anytime soon as the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike has predicted that the party will rule for the next 50 years.

Wike’s comment re-echoes a similar one made by Vincent Ogbulafor, a former national chairman of the party in 2008 that whether the opposition likes it or not, PDP will rule “for not less than 60 years”.

The minister, who reviewed his own prediction down by 10 years, spoke while addressing a former PDP national chairman now senator, Chief Barnabas Gemade, just before presenting the 2013 annual report of the Federal Ministry of Education.

Wike in his remarks addressed Gemade as the “former chairman of the only ruling party which will be the ruling party for the next 50 years”.

The minister asked the audience in the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) auditorium to give a round of applause when the hall didn’t erupt in excitement at his comment.

“There have been challenges along the line – the inclement national financial weather, the COVID-19 pandemic and others not so significant. But you have weathered the storm admirably and steadied the ship of state.

“The challenges will no doubt present a new format as you step into the third year. These are heightened political participation, pressure to deliver more dividends of democracy and increased demands from the political system. I have no doubt that you will cope nicely.

“Please continue to make the welfare of the people your biggest concern. They are the reason for the state. Without them there will be no government or any political office to occupy.

“Once again, congratulations, as I wish you a resounding success in office and every aspect of life.

“My kind regards to the good wife, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola and the entire cabinet of the State of Osun.”
