NYESOME WIKE AND SOME CHIEFTAINS OF THE PDP AT ONE OF THE RALLIES OF THE GDI IN PORT HARCOURT

A fresh crisis seems to be brewing in the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as some members have called for the resignation of the State Chairman of the party, Mr. Felix Obuah.

The aggrieved members, numbering over 250, mainly youths, stormed the State PDP Secretariat, located on Aba Road in Port Harcourt at about 8am on Tuesday, chanting war songs.

The protesters, who stormed the party secretariat in about 40 buses, claimed that the state PDP chairman had not been carrying them along in the scheme of things.

The youths, who decried the leadership style of Obuah, accused him of financing the Grassroots Development Initiative, GDI, to the detriment of the state PDP.

Majority of the youths, who also lampooned the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, for his self-serving attitude, were members of Kengema Unity Forum and Egberipapa Leadership Foundation.

Some of the inscriptions on the placard displayed by the protesters read, ‘Felix Obuah, Resign Now’, ‘GDI is Wike’s platform for his Governorship Ambition’ and ‘Obuah, You have failed PDP in Rivers State’.

GDI is a political group funded by Wike, which he intends to use to actualize his perceived governorship ambition come 2015.

One of the protesters, a member of a group belonging to a former militant leader, said the protesters were tired of being sidelined by the state PDP chairman.

The youth, who gave his name as Peterside, explained that the only solution to the current problem was for Obuah to vacate office and allow the party to move forward.

He said, “We are not happy with Bro Felix Obuah. How could he be funding GDI without remembering that the state PDP need to be financed with available funds?

“We should not be marginalised in the PDP. Money meant for the PDP should be used for the development of the party and not for another reason”.

All efforts made to reach the state PDP chairman to react to the allegation leveled against him were unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.

“There have been challenges along the line – the inclement national financial weather, the COVID-19 pandemic and others not so significant. But you have weathered the storm admirably and steadied the ship of state.

“The challenges will no doubt present a new format as you step into the third year. These are heightened political participation, pressure to deliver more dividends of democracy and increased demands from the political system. I have no doubt that you will cope nicely.

“Please continue to make the welfare of the people your biggest concern. They are the reason for the state. Without them there will be no government or any political office to occupy.

“Once again, congratulations, as I wish you a resounding success in office and every aspect of life.

“My kind regards to the good wife, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola and the entire cabinet of the State of Osun.”
