A 19-year-old boy, Burwa White, was on Monday sentenced to four months imprisonment by a Special Offences Court in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos for breach of peace.
The imprisonment also covered the offence of disrupting the duties of Cpl. Oladele Oladipupo, a policeman.
The Magistrate, Mrs J.E. Adeyemi, who sentenced the boy, however, gave him an option of a fine of N20,000.
The prosecutor, Mr Babatunde Sunmonu, had told the court that White behaved in a disorderly manner that caused a breach of the peace in the area and also resisted arrest.
Sunmonu said that the accused committed the offences at about 3.45 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Ijora area of Lagos, adding that the convict was always found in “black spots”.
He told the court that the offences contravened Section 27 of the Environmental Sanitation Law, 2003 and Section 166 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The magistrate asked White what he was doing at the time he was arrested, but he could not explain.
Similarly, the convict was unable to give his address, saying that he lived under the bridge at Ijora.
“Lagos State is a state of excellence and will not tolerate any act that prohibits the laws of the state,” the magistrate said.
She, therefore, convicted White, ruling that he would spend four months in prison for breach of the peace and for unlawfully disrupting the job of a police officer. [NAN]
