Palpable fear has gripped people of Kwankelan Maidawa in Magami District of Gusau Local Government area of Zamfara State, as some unknown gunmen have threatened to launch violent attacks on them if they do not raise a N1m ransom.
It was learnt that the community has so far raised N200, 000.
According to a source who pleaded for anonymity, the gunmen made the demand about two weeks ago.
He said the balance of N800, 000 was what the community was trying to raise before the expiry of the one month notice.
Zamfara communities have been violently attacked in recent times by suspected arsonists, who set everything in sight ablaze killing scores in the process.
It was gathered that the community, which comprised of mostly peasant farmers, has expressed its inability to raise the remaining balance, hence, some of them have started to flee the community in fear for their lives.
Confirming the planned attack, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Lawal Abdullahi said the police commissioner had ordered the dispatch of a team of detectives to the area.
