The Lagos State Government on Monday said it would add 1,000 Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras to the ones already installed across the state, to strengthen security surveillance.

Gov. Babatunde Fashola disclosed this at a programme to demonstrate the effectiveness of the state’s security surveillance system in Ikeja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the system of receiving and monitoring live feeds from the already deployed 1,200 CCTV cameras in the state was demonstrated at the occasion.

NAN reports that 1,000 of the cameras were installed by the Federal Government under its National Security Surveillance System Programme.

Fashola said the need to add to the existing CCTV cameras had become imperative, to improve surveillance and protect lives and properties.

The governor said that surveillance cameras had helped security agencies to resolve crimes and apprehend criminals.

Fashola said the government would continue to deploy solutions that would help the state in addressing its challenges.

The governor said that there was the need to boost the capacities of the police for the service to address the nation’s security challenges effectively.

He said that there was need to do more for the police in terms of finance, training and provision of equipment, to make the force better.

“We need the manpower, we need the tools, the men on the roads to patrol, in addition to a good surveillance system in order to deter criminals.

“We know that some criminals can never be deterred by whatever surveillance system you put in place but you need to put people out there, to respond to them”, he said.

Fashola said the government had supported the operations of the police in the state through the provision of equipment, patrol vans and other essentials.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Mrs Nike Animashaun, who facilitated the demonstration, said the cameras had the capacity to expose criminals wherever they were hiding.

She said government would continue to upgrade facilities at the state command centre where the cameras were controlled, to improve security in the state. (NAN)
