An industrialist and philanthropist based in Nsukka, Enugu State, Chief William Agbo has donated a brand new bungalow worth several millions of naira to Nigeria Police Force to serve as Area Commander’s residence in University town.
Chief Agbo, while speaking to Vanguard, said that he was touched to embark on the project as Area commanders posted to Nsukka do not stay for long due to lack of a befitting accommodation.
He explained that Nigeria would be fulfilling a dream of crime free society if security personnel were well motivated and encouraged in the discharge of their civic responsibility of protecting lives and property.
Chief Agbo stressed that the rationale behind the multi million naira project was to serve as an encouragement for Area Commanders posted to Enugu North senatorial zone to feel comfortable and secure.
The MD/CEO Wilson Nigeria limited Chief Agbo noted that police are human beings and deserve comfort and security while discharging their civic duty of policing the society.
Chief Agbo had earlier single handedly rehabilitated Nsukka Urban police division after an attack by armed robbers that raided several banks in Nsukka in which the then DPO Joseph Ejitagha lost his life while the police division was razed down by the robbers.
He had also built a Catholic Church worth over N100 million for his community Eha-Alumona, Nsukka LGA, Enugu State, which he furnished, as well as dug a borehole, to encourage Area Commanders to serve in Nsukka with every sense of dedication.
“Police are our friends, we believe that the peace and tranquility we enjoy in the society were as a result of the tireless efforts of the Nigeria Police force. We believe that if we are comfortable, we should also encourage them by making them comfortable, we should also encourage them by making them comfortable believing that if we do, they will help us, protect us and save lives and property, not just myself but the entire people in the society,” Chief Agbo said.
According to him, the society will be fulfilling the dreams of a crime free society if people could always assist the police at their own time of distress.
“I believe that for us to enjoy a crime free society, we should encourage the police by making them comfortable. So I enjoin all well meaning individuals and donor agencies not to leave the task of the welfare of police officers and men into the hands of governments alone”, he said.
He also attributed the reduction of criminal activities in Nsukka and its environs to measures put in place by the Area Command, Nsukka.
“Since the arrival of Ros-Armson Haladu Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) as the Area Commander to Nsukka the people have been sleeping with their eyes closed and even the last Christmas celebration of 2013 could attest to the credit of the command and other divisions in the area as it was a crime free period,” he said.
A policeman who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity, expressed delight at the generosity of Chief Agbo to the police adding that they were not surprised as he has always been the one that spur their spirit to action to cushion the effect of the society. He noted that the Area Commander’s residence built by Chief Agbo is a three bed-room apartment with every other apparatus of a building attached.
“We will continue to be grateful to Chief William Agbo and pray that God will keep him for us. The official commissioning of the building by the Commissioner of police Enugu State, has been slated to hold February 14 2014, as every other thing has been put in place for the commissioning.” [Vanguard]
