Mata “Relishes” Rooney Link Up, Says United Will Fight Back.

Manchester United’s new signing Juan Mata “relishes” linking up with teammate Wayne Rooney and says he will be supportive of the striker.

The Spaniard’s £37.1m move to United fueled speculations concerning the England international’s future, but the club is believed to be discussing a new improved deal with the 28-year-old presently.

“He’s one of the best players in this country’s history. I’ll try to connect with him as much as I can,” Mata said in his first press briefing and official presentation on Monday afternoon.

David Moyes has also stressed that the midfielder’s deal will be first of many more to come, nonetheless, the better news is the return of both Rooney and Robin van Persie ahead of Tuesday’s home league game against Cardiff City.

Treble-winner Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returns to Old Trafford as the Bluebird’s manager and may have to start plotting on stopping the improved United frontline from causing any havoc to his fledgling Premier League managerial career since succeeding Malky Mackay early this year.

David Moyes confirmed the trio of Rooney, Van Persie and Marouane Felaini trained alongside the new recruit on Monday but adds, “he will make a decision (on Mata) tomorrow.”

Mata, who will wear the number eight shirt continued: “He (Rooney) is a striker who can score, assist and come into midfield to take the ball.

“I will try to connect with him as much as possible and find the gaps in rival defences. I think that’s my best style of play, to get into positions where I can assist the strikers.”

Mata believes it is imperative for the club to close up the gap between them and the current top fours, while stating critically it was an easy decision to switch to the champions because he knows they always aim for glory.

“I think it’s important for the club to get into the top four and give us the opportunity to play in the Championsn League. It’s what the club deserves and it is the tournament in which the club has to play,” Mata, who was voted Chelsea’s official player of the year in the past two seasons, added.

“What I like the most about this club is the character. If another club was in this position it would be very difficult for them to come back and win it (the Premier League), but this club can do it. This is the image I have of Man United, always fighting for titles and always coming back from difficult moments.

“I wanted to go to a place where I would feel happy and I’m happy now.

“Manchester United are a massive club, with the most fans around the world so it’s a big challenge for my career, a big step. With the players that are here and to come in the summer, this club is going to be successful for sure.”

The 25-year-old scored 32 goals for the Blues in over 130 appearances but had fallen in the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, who returned to the club from Real Madrid.

He says his new deal boosts his chances of making Spain’s World Cup squad, having capped 32 times with World and European champions Spain.

“This (transfer) was important for the World Cup. The Spanish squad is difficult to get into with a lot of players fighting for positions. So I hope it’s going to be a great opportunity for me to show the manager of the national team I want to be there and have to be there.

“Now the moment is here, I want to play as much as I can and if things go good in the last part of the season the World Cup will be closer for me,” he said.
