Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Monday inaugurated the 2.1km Ejigbo-Ajao Link Road in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area just as he named the two bridges on the road as “January 27 Link Bridge” in memory of the victims of the 2002 Ikeja bomb blast.

Fashola, who led guests to observe a minute silence in honour of over 1,000 victims of the unfortunate incident 12 years ago, noted that such was preventable only if the authorities in charge had not gone to sleep on their responsibilities.

He said men, women and children perished in the Oke-Afa canal “because a national government led by the Peoples Democratic Party failed to do its duties. There is no other excuse for it. That was their responsibility to manage bombs and explosives and to look after the Nigerian military, but they dropped the bombs.

“Since then, they have pretended as if nothing was wrong”.

The governor while decrying the incident said it prompted his administration to intervene by rebuilding the schools and hospitals located within the Ikeja Cantonment which was affected by the blast.

Accordingly, he said the Ejigbo-Ajao Link Road was another fulfillment of the state government’s promise in 2002 to open up the area as part of government’s drive to renew inner city roads.

“My predecessor promised you that day that a bridge will be built to link Ejigbo to Ajao Estate. I have come here today to fulfil that promise”, he affirmed.

On road rehabilitation in Ejigbo, Fashola berated the Federal Government for turning a blind eye to roads in the area, which according to him were damaged by the activities of oil tankers lifting fuel from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s depot in Ejigbo.

“It shows the kind of respect and concern that the party that manages the Federal Government has for you; they will come back to you and ask for votes”, Fashola stated.
