65,318 suspects were arrested by the police of the Lagos and Ogun State Command in 2013, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), in-charge of Zone 2 Headquarters comprising of Lagos and Ogun State Commands, Mamman Tsafe has said.

Tsafe, who made this disclosure yesterday said the suspects were arrested for various offences.

Both commands had last year arrested 790 suspected armed robbers, 76 kidnappers, 280 cult members and 158 suspected r*pists.

The commands had also recovered 568 of different cache of arms, 5399 live ammunition and also recovered about 1166 cars.

The AIG who was represented by the Zonal Police Public Relations Spokesperson, Lewi Suleiman, a superintendent of police, attributed the success to the cooperation between the police and members of the public.

“For last year, we made a total arrest of 65,318 suspects for various offences and those found wanting under the law had been arraigned in court for possible prosecution.

“Breaking down the statistics, a total of 790 suspected armed robbers were arrested and our men recovered 568 cache of arms and about 5399 live ammunition,” he said.

“Both commands received and reviewed a total number of 158 rape cases and at the end of investigation, 101 suspects were charged to court , while 57 are still awaiting the Directorate of Public Prosecution advise.

“Also, a total of 503 vehicles were reported snatched from their owners, and in swift reaction, the commands recovered about 1166 vehicles from the hoodlums.

“We also arrested 76 kidnappers, including 280 cult members, who were arrested from various locations in the zone in the year under review.”

Tsafe said though some robbers died in various encounters with police, the commands also recorded some casualties, adding that it would not in any way deter his men.

He said, “This loss would not deter the police in continuing to sustain and improve on its crime prevention strategies and accord better service delivery to the people of Lagos and Ogun States.

“We therefore call for more support from members of the public to work with the police to make this year a more peaceful one for everyone involved.”
