A 19-year-old student decided to give a lecture in modernism when the university teacher failed to turn up.

Plucky Joel Pearce took charge of the class as he slammed the increased £9,000 tuition fees and wanting to give students their ‘money’s worth.’

Most of the Liverpool University students left after about 10 minutes of waiting, leaving just Joel and two fellow students in the lecture theatre.

But, he told the class, he had “some vague knowledge” of modernism, and pressed on regardless.

He said: “We only have two students left in the room besides myself and my knowledge of modernism is, let’s say, scant and my lecturing abilities are quite, well, inadequate but I think I’ll give it a go anyway.”

Joel, who delivered an off-the-cuff seven minute speech exploring “semi-comic, semi-tragic, quasi-philosophical texts,” was filmed and the video posted on YouTube.
