Professor Says What Can Affect Jonathan’s Bid For Re-Election

According to Professor Dahiru Yahaya, the Chair-Occupant, Yusuf Bala Usman Professorial Chair, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria said yesterday, the inability of President Goodluck Jonathan to handle the insurgency in the North-east region appropriately may affect his bid for re-election in 2015.

Prof. Yahaya made this comment while delivering the lecture entitled “Succession in Nigerian Political Culture: The role of two cities and the third” at book presentation on former Inspector General of Police Mohammed Dikko Yusuf in Kaduna.

The extract from his speech reads,

“Who succeeds President Jonathan in the year 2013 is a question on the lips of many Nigerians. His assumed candidature of self-succession has become a little tricky. The letter former president Olusegun Obasanjo, his political mentor until recently, wrote to him is disturbing. The issues Obasanjo raised in the letter as they stand and the claim that he had consulted with some key leaders of this country, which claim they did not deny, make the matter rather complicated.

“The rebellion within his party, the PDP, is a significant issue too. The bloody crisis in the north and the manner his government handles it is not satisfactory to many people. This problem may compromise the support he received from key northern interests in the previous election.

“President Jonathan has congenial personality. He is a deeply religious and patriotic man who enjoyed immense goodwill in some important circles in the North. Whatever happens, the president has stayed in office for a term and a half. Most of the former Nigerian presidents and Heads of State were not that opportuned.”

Yusuf was characterized by many officials present at the occasion as a true citizen of the world.

In addition, President Goodluck Jonathan who was represented by Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade, described Yusuf as someone who has faith in what he believes in, adding that he is “man of substance.”
