Ooni: ‘It’s Better For Our Children To Attend Private University Than Govt-Owned Institutions’

Ooni-of-IfeThe Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II, was among dignitaries conferred with honorary doctorate degrees on Friday by private university, Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Though not specifically referring to the many crisis that bedevil the administration of public universities in Nigeria, the Ooni at the occasion disclosed that it was better to get educated in private universities than the ones owned by the government even as he made a passionate appeal to parents to make education of their children and wards an utmost priority in life.

The revered traditional ruler, who was conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Business Administration, described education as key to the development of any nation.

“This is my first time at the Lead City and with what I saw here today it is better for our children to attend private university than government owned university,” the Ooni said adding that, “I can say with all emphasis that Lead City University is better than many of the government owned universities around. I am very proud of the university”.

Oba Sijuwade also used the occasion to clear the air surrounding the controversy over the supremacy of some Yoruba towns.

The ancient towns of Ife (Osun State) and Oyo (Oyo State) have been locked in a battle of supremacy over which one should be regarded as the ancestral town of Yorubas

But warning against distortion of history, the monarch said Ile-Ife had existed many centuries before even the birth of Jesus Christ.

“Ile- ife was created 10,000 years before the birth of Christ. Epeland was created in 1832, Agodoyo where Alaafin is, was created in 1837. Then how can anyone say it has existed before Ile-Ife?” he queried.

“This is distortion of history and it should be stopped. We all belong to Ile-Ife and it will remain forever until God decides otherwise and by that time, none of us here will be around”, the Ooni stressed.

Other dignitaries honoured at this year’s convocation ceremony of Lead City University include the Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi; Group Managing Director of Odu’a Investment Company Ltd., Mr Adebayo Jimoh and Falil Abina, a banker, who received honourary doctorate in Banking and Finance and Thompson Oshin, the first African Physiotherapist.

Lead City University, formerly City University, Ibadan, was formally established in 2005 by Eduserve Consult.
