Mother Arrested After Daughter Allegedly Brought Cocaine to School

A Florida woman has been accused of child abuse after her daughter allegedly showed up to RC Lipscomb Elementary School on Nov. 14 with cocaine in her backpack.

Shana Beck of Cantonment was arrested on Monday and charged with felony child neglect without great bodily harm.

According to school principal Susan Sanders, a teacher became aware of the drugs when
Beck’s daughter began crying and showed her a small baggie of white power. The child told the teacher that she had been in the car with Beck and a friend the night before and they had been looking for the missing bag. It somehow ended up in her backpack.

“I’m not particularly surprised,” said Brian Stanton, Beck’s neighbor. “I’ve seen the kids unattended in the neighborhood, walkin’ the streets at all hours of the night.”

Another neighbor had a different take.

“They’re outside doing something when you go by, they’re always wavin’ at you,” said Rick West. “It’s just I can’t believe it.”

The Florida Department of Children and Family Services is looking into the matter. Beck is currently free on bail and is due back in court at the end of the month.
