Manchester United Can Win Champions League-Moyes.

Manchester United boss David Moyes believes his side are one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season but stressed the need for improvement.

The Scotsman was speaking after Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk, which saw the three-time winners finish top of Group A with 14 points.

Phil Jones swept home a volley from Robin van Persie’s corner to help the English club bounce back from two domestic league losses at Old Trafford and see off the Ukrainians.

“I think we could be classed as one of the favourites,” said Moyes.

“We’ll have to improve in order to progress. A club like Manchester United has to be trying to win the trophy.”

United’s contrasting fortune in the Champions League has had them record four wins in six preliminary round matches, while they’ve lost three home matches so far in the ongoing Premier League season.

The ‘Red Devils’ are ninth in the table after 15 games, 13 points behind leaders Arsenal.

“I do believe there is a different style and you can tell the players here are used to it,” Moyes added.

“They are well experienced in European football so I think they are more than capable of playing at this level. They are comfortable with it.

“They are also very comfortable in the Premier League but at the moment they are not showing it.”

The club will take a break from European competition until February and hopes next week’s second round draw favours them on paper. However, Moyes would want to take it one game at a time.

“You have to get better as the tournament goes on,” he said.

“It’s a tough competition, a hard one, but we will take it one at a time.”

Up next will be a trip to Villa Park in the league on Sunday before a League Cup quarter-final tie at Stoke the following Wednesday.
