The Kano State Government has begun the spraying and fumigation of the municipal council areas of Kano, to prevent the spread of malaria and other infectious diseases.

Alhaji Abdullahi Bichi, the Managing Director of the state Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Monday.

Bichi said the board was conducting the exercise twice daily as well as fumigating swamps, refuse collection centres and ponds across the 88 wards of the municipal area.

“In the morning, we spray ponds, swampy areas and refuse collection centres to kill the larvae of the mosquitoes.

“In the evenings, we fumigate to kill the adult mosquitoes that actually spread the malaria disease”.

He said Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso had given all necessary logistical support to the board in its efforts to rid the city of diseases and vectors since May 2011.

“This helped in no small way to reduce the massive refuse on the streets and gutters across the city and this has been sustained”.

The managing director, however, said that the board was not limiting its activities to the municipal areas as the agency also reaches other areas on request.

“On request, we go to other area councils. It has been discovered that the bulk of the work is inside Kano city because of the large population. Other areas are less problematic actually”, he said. (NAN)
