Eight male and six female finalists emerged in the boxing events of the ongoing National Youth games at the Abuja National Stadium velodrome on Wednesday.
David David picked up the first final ticket in the male 51kg category after defeating John Olagbenro.
Wasiu Adeyemi from Kwara and Ekire Paul of Cross River State saw off Yakubu Awalu of Team Kano and Mohammed Umar respectively to book a place in the 54kg category finals.
Onukwa Stanley from Enugu also booked a final berth while Stanley beat Uchenta Fabian representing Ondo State in the 57kg category through a Technical Knock-Out (TKO) in round three.
Bernard Kayode from Gombe beat Asuquo Edem of Cross River State in a split decision to grab a final ticket.
Akpan Joshua from Akwa Ibom State won by an unanimous decision against Bawa Anyado of Nasarawa while Agbo Kenechukwu from Enugu State cruised into the finals with a 2-1 split decision against Musa Jazuli from Kwara State.
In the male’s 63.5kg event, Precious Tameno of River State claimed victory by split decision against Eze Ifeanyi of Anambra.
Two fights were suspended on technical ground. This includes: the bout between Usama Muhammed from Kano and Aremu Rasheed from Ogun State, and tha of Lawson Shakini of Osun and Abdullahi Sanni from Kano.
In the female’s 51kg category, Ewah Jerry from Cross River State clinched her final ticket by beating Chuckwu Roseline from Ondo while Ekpelimode Sophia from Delta State won Liade Rukayat of Kwara State.
The other female bouts saw Maxwell Caroline of Delta beat Samuel Omotoyosi of Borno State by a split decision while Asa Etim representing Cross River saw threw in the towel against Nwafam Chisom of Anambra State.
The finals of the various weight categories takes places today at the Abuja National Stadium velodrome.
