The 11 governors of the All Progressives Congress under the aegis of Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) have congratulated the five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, who defected to the opposition party on Tuesday.

The PDP governors that defected to APC are Governors Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers). The five governors form part of the G-7 governors, who engaged in open confrontation with the Bamanga Tukur-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling party and President Goodluck Jonathan over the way the party is being run and the plan to hand the president an automatic return ticket to vie for a second term in office come 2015.

The governors of Niger and Jigawa States – Babangida Aliyu and Sule Lamido respectively, however, decided to stay put in PDP and continue their fight from within.

But the defection of the five governors was described by the PGF as “courageous” just as they were hailed “for taking the historic step of leaving the governing, albeit, fast crumbling PDP into the progressives fold”.

A statement signed by the 11 APC governors namely Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Kashim Shettima (Borno), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Umaru Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Rochas Okorocha (Imo) and Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe) on Monday night, said that the coming of the five PDP governors to the APC, “despite all manners of intimidation, harassment and persecution by the Federal Government and the PDP is worthy of commendation and is indicative of a strong personal principles and commitment to the progress of Nigeria.”

They said considering the nature of achievements recorded in their respective states, the defected governors had no business belonging to a party they described as a party that had no democratic traditions.

They noted that the PDP had no plan for Nigeria beyond squandering public resources and further impoverishing Nigerians in spite of unprecedented oil revenues.

The APC governors, therefore, said they were welcoming the affected governors but reminded them that by coming into the fold of the progressives, the G-5 had opted to discard the politics of corruption, nepotism and deception in favour of transparent and accountable leadership that was being governed by the principles of progress, integrity and equity.

“Together, we shall forge stronger alliances by joining forces with other like-minded progressives to rescue Nigeria from imminent collapse,” they added.
