The Nigeria Police Force has released jingles aimed at discouraging people from committing crimes in Abuja.

Speaking, Wednesday, at the ceremony, Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar said the jingles were meant to discourage young Nigerians from engaging in crime and to elicit public support and participation in tackling crime.

He explained that the jingles were in consonance with his efforts to address the security challenges of terrorism, insurgency and kidnapping in the country.

“The jingles will also address challenges of cultism, rape as well as human and drug trafficking offences.

“They will help in re-branding the nation and generally help to educate citizens on how to avoid victimisation by criminals.”

According to him, the jingles, in English and Pidgin, were targeted at Nigerians, particularly those in the rural areas who may not have quick access to other means of communication.

The inspector general said they would be broadcast simultaneously in several radio stations across the country.

Abubakar commended the United Bank for Africa (UBA) for collaborating with the Police in bringing the media sensitisation campaign to fruition.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Group Managing Director of UBA, Mr Philips Oduoza, said the bank decided to partner with the police because of the reforms taking place in it.

“I have to say that the financial institutions are the biggest beneficiaries of a secured environment.

“For a bank like UBA that operates in 19 African countries, we know that a very secured environment is very good for our business.

“We believe that information is very key and the public should be able to pass relevant information to the police with which to reduce crime.”
