Liverpool’s Enrique Likely to Face Surgery and Miss the Rest of the Season.

Liverpool defender, Jose Enrique, has been ruled out with a long-term knee injury which is likely to require surgery.

The Spaniard, who is at risk of missing the remainder of the season, will not take part in this weekend’s Merseyside derby.

From all indications, his absence presents summer loan signing Aly Cissokho the opportunity to be called up to Brendan Rodgers’ first-team.

It is understood the Spaniard has been struggling with the problem for some time and has featured just twice in the Reds’ last five matches, with one of those appearances a 30-minute substitute appearance.

“Jose Enrique has been struggling for a little while with an injury,” the manager told Talksport. “He will probably need an operation. It’s a blow for us because he’s a very talented player.”

Since joining the Anfield club from Newcastle in 2011, the left-back has established himself as an important player.

Rodgers revealed Enrique had been unfit since the start of the season after the 2-2 draw with Newcastle in October.

“Jose was injured,” the Northern Irishman said. “He’s had a problem with his knee and he’s struggled.

“In fairness to him, he’s put himself out for the team to go out and play.

“But he was suffering with it and we just felt it was best for him to come out and make it right.”
