Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State yesterday described the National conference proposed by President Goodluck Jonathan as diversionary and a talk shop that will not yield the desired result.

He made this known at the end of a meeting with his Jigawa State counterpart, Alhaji Sule Lamido at the Presidential Lodge in Dutse.

He said: “Our position on the proposed national conference is very clear. The conference is a waste of time and it is diversionary. For me I think now is time to work and deliver the goods to the people rather than host a talk shop in Abuja. The responsibility of all elected persons such as local government chairmen, governors and the president is to work for the people and this is the time to work, not talk”.

The governor, who was away on hajj at the invitation of the Saudi Arabian authorities when the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, revoked his ownership of a plot of land in Maitama District, Abuja, over allegations that his property was illegally extended to an area not approved, told reporters that he has all the legal documents for all his property in Abuja, adding that he was yet to receive any notice on the demolition.

He also told journalists that he was yet to see details of the court ruling concerning the New Peoples’ Democratic Party, nPDP, just as he added that he had faith in the Abubakar Kawu Baraje-led nPDP to respond appropriately to the court ruling.

While declining reporters’ request to divulge details of his closed door meeting with Gov. Lamido, the Kano governor stated that it was not for public consumption, but added that they reviewed their tenure and development projects in both states. Jigawa was carved out of the old Kano State.

Gov. Kwankwaso, who inspected ongoing works at the Dutse airport project site, advised the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah to allow foreign airlines fly into the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, MAKIA, if she must sleep well.

He said: “Anyone, who knows that lady (Stella Oduah), should tell her that she will only sleep well when she allows foreign airlines to land in Kano.”

Kwankwaso also reserved praises for Lamido for the foresight in building the airport, saying, “I have heard so many things about this airport. Today I am here to see things myself. I have seen the runway, the tower, fire service station, the power house, terminal and everything. I must commend you,” adding that posterity would be kind to the governor for bequeathing a lasting legacy for the state and Nigeria.

“There have been challenges along the line – the inclement national financial weather, the COVID-19 pandemic and others not so significant. But you have weathered the storm admirably and steadied the ship of state.

“The challenges will no doubt present a new format as you step into the third year. These are heightened political participation, pressure to deliver more dividends of democracy and increased demands from the political system. I have no doubt that you will cope nicely.

“Please continue to make the welfare of the people your biggest concern. They are the reason for the state. Without them there will be no government or any political office to occupy.

“Once again, congratulations, as I wish you a resounding success in office and every aspect of life.

“My kind regards to the good wife, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola and the entire cabinet of the State of Osun.”
