Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi yesterday took a swipe at the state command off the police, describing some of the alleged actions of the force as an attempt to turn Rivers into a military state.

Speaking at a ceremony at Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, to mark the 53rd anniversary of the country’s independence, Amaechi also urged the people of Rivers State to join forces with the state government to resist the move.

The governor recalled among other things, how the Police dispersed 13,000 newly recruited teachers by the state government at the Liberation Stadium over unfounded excuse that they were hired to protest against the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

He also said that all steps should be taken to thwart attempts by those plotting to disrupt democratic flow in the state.

Amaechi further assured that his administration would continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to the state, adding that he would not compromise on the standard of education.

“We must come together as a people to chase away those who want to turn Rivers State into a military state.

“This state is identified by an elected government and we must identify with a civilian government,” he said.

You are already running Rivers State as a police state. Who are the Rivers people that will join you? The people you rejected since you became governor or is it the rivers people you said did not support your fight to become governor. You are truely insane. Go to the North and west to bring your supporters as always.
