Las Vegas police are investigating a case where a newborn baby was found dead inside a trash bin.

The baby was found behind Planet Hollywood on the Las Vegas Strip.

Police received a call from a casino employee around 1 p.m. on Monday.

According to Metro, the body was discovered when resort employees were searching the trash bin for recyclables.

Homicide and Abuse & Neglect officers are investigating.

Police are reviewing surveillance video to figure out whether it was a hotel guest who left the child there, or someone who walked in.

They’re also trying to figure out the gender of the baby and if it was alive when it was taken there.

The alley serves as a service road and an access to the self parking garage, so there is typically heavy traffic in the area, making things more complicated for investigators.

Caesars Entertainment, which runs Planet Hollywood, released this statement regarding the situation:

“We are supporting Metro’s efforts in their investigation.”

Authorities want to remind everyone the Save Haven Act allows parents to surrender infants without fear of arrest or prosecution.

“A newborn baby can be brought to any fire station, any police station or any medical facility, like a hospital and dropped off. No questions [will be] asked,” says Tim Szymanski with Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. He tells Action News, about six months ago a mother dropped off a newborn at a local fire station, but it’s uncommon in this area.
