Amanfor Says Enyimba’s Goal has shifted to Finishing Runner-Ups.

Enyimba FC now looks to finishing the 2012/13 Glo Premier League season as runner-ups to eventual winners so as to grab one of the two CAF Champions League tickets available.

The Aba club’s dream for a league and cup double failed to stand the test of time, after conceding two successive away loses at Kano Pillars and Sunshine Stars in Lokoja and Akure respectively.

Following victory over Warri Wolves in the final of the 2013 Federation Cup played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, players and management of the two-time African champions had hoped to add the league title to their trophy cabinet.

Having lost out of the title race, the ‘Peoples Elephant’ plans to finish the season the strongest possible means and will have to earn victory on Sunday as they hosts Sharks at the Enyimba international Stadium in the final match of the season.

“Our claim for the title started slipping off our hands in the 0-1 loss to Kano Pillars in Lokoja before Wednesday’s defeat at Sunshine Stars in Akure,” said Enyimba striker Chimenzie Amanfor to superport.com.

“Our dream have been to make it a double but that won’t happen again as the only realistic chance to finish strongly in the ongoing league is to finish as second best.

“We’ll strive to finish second so as to qualify for the Caf Champions League.

“Though we have the Caf Confederation Cup ticket in our hands our focus and preference have been on the Champions League ticket.

“Sharks are a strong side but I don’t think they’ll be able to stop us from picking the three points at stake. We’ll win the game against Sharks so as to end the season on a high.”

The six-time Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions are fourth on the log on 59 points. They will be banking on the best favourable results from the matches involving Gombe United and second-placed team Bayelsa United and, that between Enugu Rangers and third-placed El-Kanemi Warriors to climb second, to reach their goal even on securing victory on Matchday 38.
